Infant Attachment: Theories

Number of pages: 6

ABSTRACT:
6 pages in length. Cognitive and emotional growth does not exist at birth; rather, each one requires the presence of security from and bonding with parental figures to nurture development. If an infant is not provided with the love and connection inherent to this bonding period, the very real potential exists for the child to have developmental problems of stability that impact his entire life. Understanding the fundamental principles behind attachment theories allows for a greater realization of just how critical a human-to-human bond is for an infant who, in essence, is a clean slate of cognitive and emotional proficiency requiring the one-on-one experience and connection in order to cultivate them. Piaget and Vygotsky are two developmental theorists who provide their respective philosophies to illustrate how vitally important the notion of attachment is during infancy as well as into the first years of life. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
